Tracy Austin, B.A., M.A., (psych) (RP), is the founder & director of The Asanga Meditation Centre in Newmarket which recently opened in 2017 in Newmarket.
She specializes in mindfulness-based meditation (Vipassana) and has also studied Tibetan (Vajrayana) and Zen meditation. She inspires people to find greater freedom and joy by learning to be present and to awaken to their natural wisdom within.
At the age of 17, she had a deep realization and commitment towards growing inwardly and began studying the ancient teachings from both eastern and western religions. After high school, she spent 2 years in residency at Kripalu Yoga Ashram in Massachusetts living an intense yogic lifestyle. She returned to Toronto, got married, and began her B.A at the University of Calgary focusing on psychology, philosophy & east/west religions. Between her Master's degree and her BA, she worked in the Office of the President at York University as the personal administrative assistant to the 'Secretary to the University'. Then, she and her husband moved to Boulder, Colorado where she completed her Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology from Naropa University where she accessed psychological and academic teachers in Buddhist as well as Western psychology.
She has also served as a ‘work-study’ personal administrative assistant to the Dean of Naropa University at the time of her degree. One summer, as part of her Buddhist studies program, she did a meditation retreat in the Rocky Mountains for close to 3 months — sitting approx. 6 hours per day. Tracy has taken numerous eastern and meditative programs from many advanced teachers. Her mindfulness-based programs are based on the widely respected program developed by Jon Kabbat-Zin (founder for the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts).
"The direct experiential practice in a group with an experienced meditation teacher over the duration of a structured course with the same group members provides a great opportunity to really get the right learning and benefits."
In clinical settings, Tracy has been in private practice as a psychotherapist for many years. Prior to her practice, she worked as an Addiction and Assessment intake counselor for the Women’s Eating Disorder Recovery Center at Boulder Community Hospital in Boulder, Colorado. Moving back to Toronto, she served in a community mental health setting as a clinical therapist for York Region Mental Health (formerly located in Thornhill).
She has led many meditation groups across the GTA and has also served on the Board of Directors for the Toronto Kripalu Yoga Centre. In 2017, she opened The Asanga Meditation Center in Newmarket to serve the greater ‘north’ GTA for meditation.
